Is Fear Controlling Your Inner Compass?
Everyone with a serious illness experiences fear. Fear has many faces; it can be subtle or uncomfortably obvious. And it can fill your entire being.
Fear can become so strong that it creates a continual background noise. You feel like you’re permanently aligned with a new north pole: FEAR.
If you notice the presence of fear, it’s okay. What isn’t okay is when fear informs and guides all your thoughts, decisions, and actions.
How many times have you had a strong physical, emotional, or spiritual
response to your diagnosis?
Have you woken in the middle of the night with a pounding heart, terrified by nightmares?
Have you questioned your spiritual path or connection while wondering if your diagnosis is some sort of punishment, a result of having done something “wrong”?
How often have you walked out of your doctor’s office feeling no closer to knowing what to do than when you walked in?
If you’ve experienced any of these things more than once or twice in the last week, your inner compass is controlled by your fear.
When you put a magnet next to a real compass, the needle swings away from north, towards the magnet. It’s the same with your own inner knowing: when you’re controlled by your fear, your inner compass swings wildly and cannot provide the direction it’s meant to give you.
So, fear is controlling my inner compass. What can I do about it?
