Do these scenarios sound like you?
- Several days after your annual physical, you get a call from your doctor. There are abnormalities. You sense that there is something needing attention but that it’s not cancer. You want to trust your intuition; you have always been able to rely on it. But the stakes are so high that you wonder if your inner knowing will guide you correctly. The biopsy shows that you do have cancer; suddenly, you’re faced with life-altering decisions.
- Your doctor is describing all sorts of procedures and medications and options. Your family is frightened. They’re pushing you to make choices, but they don’t feel like the right ones. You’re confused and overwhelmed and you don’t know where to turn.
- Life is good. Aside from a few minor symptoms, you’re healthy. You don’t drink or smoke, and you do exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet. But then medical tests reveal you have a serious illness. You are overwhelmed with anger. You think, "I don’t deserve this, this should be happening to people who eat junk all day - WHY ME!"
- You’ve been diagnosed with cancer. The doctor says this isn’t something to mess around with, and you must have radical surgery. You’ve always preferred to use alternative therapies for any illness. But the stakes are higher now, and you’re confused about which treatment is right for you.
- When you hear that you have a life-threatening illness, fear, confusion, and overwhelm rush over you like a tidal wave. Before you know it - sometimes before you can blink! you’re permanently tuned to the radio station called "FEAR 89." Fear becomes your inner compass - and it spins wildly.
- That little bump on your forehead is a constant worry, and you’re afraid to see a doctor for fear he will diagnose it as cancer. Eventually, living with the fear gets worse than seeing the doctor. So you go for a biopsy. You’re told you’ll have the results in five days - and those five days are a lifetime of waiting. Your fear escalates into terror when the results come back with a cancer diagnosis.
